Real estate fraud gives flipping a bad name
Not that there’s anything wrong with flipping, Hayes told me in a phone interview from his Dallas office. But it gets a bad rap when associated with the crooks who commit mortgage fraud and its close cousin, appraisal fraud. While he wholeheartedly supports bills recently introduced to crack down on those frauds, Hayes wants state lawmakers to understand “flipping” a house is neither nefarious nor should it be made illegal. The problem is those lawmakers have incorrectly lumped the “F word” with mortgage and appraisal frauds when they announced their bills. (more…)

Laurelmor will be built in phases, with a master plan calling for about 1,500 homes, 1,000 condominium units or hotel rooms, two 18-hole golf courses, 50 miles of roads, a spa, water park, equestrian center, observatory and other amenities. Ginn plans to hold a sale of lots in October and to open in 2009. Ginn expects to have a sales day in October for a first phase. A spokesperson said that the company hasn’t made completed lot prices for Laurelmor, but that the most inexpensive lot would likely be around $500,000. As homeowners across Florida open their windstorm insurance renewal notices this year, they are learning they’re going to be paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars more for their premiums. What they may not know is that today and for the past three decades, they have also been sending tax money, both indirectly and directly, to property insurance companies — not to keep their own premiums low, but to ensure those companies’ profits.
That state government is involved even to the extent it is today is testament to the crucial role property insurance plays in the lifeblood of Florida’s economy: real estate development. Tudors: Going medieval in style
The Tudors were the ruling dynasty at the time and members of the family included some of the most famous monarchs in English history. Henry the Eighth and Elizabeth the First were both Tudors, as was Mary the First - also known as Bloody Mary. Half-timbered, stucco walls, turrets and steeply pitched roofs with cross gables are characteristics of the style. Windows tend to be very tall and panes very small; they’re often leaded in a diamond pattern. Arched entryways and substantial chimneys topped by terra cotta pots are also common Tudor themes.
